Selling or Replacing Your Device
Last updated October 2, 2026
OwnBudget stores your data locally, on your device — that's what makes it private by design. It also means a few things work differently than apps that keep your data in the cloud.
There's no remote-wipe feature. If your vault is still on a device when it changes hands, whoever has it next could open the app and see your data — unless you clear it yourself first.
Before you sell, recycle, or give away any device that's ever had OwnBudget on it:
- If you have Pro, remove the device from your license. Go to Settings → About → Manage devices, enter your purchase email, and remove the device. This frees one of your two Pro slots. Clearing your data or resetting the device doesn't do this on its own — the device keeps holding one of your Pro slots, and after Clear all data, OwnBudget on that device would still be Pro for whoever opens it next.
- Then clear your data. Go to Settings → Data Management → Clear all data. This permanently deletes all of your OwnBudget data on that device — accounts, transactions, budgets, goals, bills, categories, and merchant rules — so export anything you want to keep first. Data Management also lets you export your full vault, or individual pieces like accounts, bills, and merchant rules.
- Or, instead of clearing your data, do a full factory reset of the device, which removes OwnBudget's data along with everything else. You still need to remove the device from your Pro license.
Clear your data before the device leaves your hands, not after. If you forget to remove the device from your Pro license, you can still do it later from any other device — go to Manage devices, enter your purchase email, and remove it. Removal takes effect on that device the next time it checks in, not instantly.
